Founded in 2007 at Otis Joint Base Cape Cod by Doug Foley, MMA 1981, and his wife Dianne. Doug and Dianne wanted to give back in some way to our military. Doug and Dianne’s daughter Samantha (MMA 2012), and son Zack (MMA 2016), have also teamed up to support the family effort. The first event in 2007 coincided with the 2007 Air Show at Otis, which featured the United States Air Force Thunderbird Team. The tournament was appropriately named “The Thunderbird Classic” in honoring our Armed Forces and Veterans all over the world. All proceeds of the tournament benefit MMA cadets who are dependents of active duty military parents and family.
The Thunderbird has grown substantially with both participants and sponsorships and has expanded into a scholarship fund at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. The Daniel Joseph Foley “75” Scholarship is awarded each year to cadets who are dependents of an active duty member of the Armed Forces.
The goal of the Thunderbird Classic is to provide a perpetual scholarship to cadets, which will help support their education at the Academy. This scholarship is unique in that it also supports our military families. In closing, the Thunderbird Tournament Committee, and alums, would like to thank you in advance for your participation and support of this worthy cause.
Golfers will have the opportunity to win a 2018 Harley Davidson and a 2018 Toyota as Hole-in-One prizes. Exciting auction prizes will be offered. Meet the Scholarship Recipients. Cape Cod Beer Tasting on the course.
